DAY 1: TRAVEL DAY

Meet at the Salt Lake International Airport at the appointed time to begin this tour of Germany and Austria. Travel by air to Munich, Germany. The trip, which will include layovers, will begin day 1 and arrive in Germany day 2 after traveling overnight. Travel will be in Economy Basic class unless traveler upgrades to different class for an additional fee.

DAY 2: ARRIVAL IN GERMANY

Upon arrival at the Munich airport, the group leader will assist the group in getting through security and customs, and to the Munich hotel. Time for settling into rooms will precede an afternoon of local sightseeing and authentic Bavarian fare in downtown Munich. Stroll through the Marienplatz and view the Neues Rathaus (town hall), with its chiming glockenspiel that reenacts 16th century stories.

DAY 3: MUNICH

Marvel at the opulent Residenz Palace, the largest city palace in Germany, and enjoy its architecture, room decorations, and displays from the former royal collections. After lunch, visit the Frauenkirche (Church of our Blessed Lady), one of the most recognizable landmarks in the city. The church's tower provides a wonderful aerial view of the city for those willing to climb its steps.

DAY 4: DACHAU AND PASSION PLAY

Spend the morning at Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial site, filled with photographs, documents and reconstructed cell blocks. It is a somber reminder of a dark period of history. [Note: Some of the information in this memorial may be disturbing.] Travel to Oberammergau to experience from front row seats the stunning Passion Play, performed since 1634, depicting the final week of Christ’s life.

DAY 5: BAVARIA

View the impressive baroque Pilgrimage church of Wies before heading to Neuschwanstein Castle, King Ludwig’s grandiose fairy tale residence. Take in the gorgeous view from Marienbrücke. After lunch, spend the afternoon strolling through the Partnachklamm Gorge, created by the Partnach River eroding a deep crevasse into pure rock and creating one of the most beautiful gorges in the alpine region.

DAY 6: INNSBRUCK

Stroll the colorful streets of Innsbruck, an Austrian alpine town surrounded by enormous, snow-capped mountains. Wander through the market stalls and shops, gaze at the Golden Roof, climb the city tower and visit the Cathedral of St. James. Marvel at the Hofkirche, with its imposing royal statues, and explore Ambras Castle containing medieval armor and artwork dating back hundreds of years.

DAY 7: EXPLORING THE ALPS

Tour the Swarovski Kristalwelten to take in the gleaming crystal creations. Then traverse lush green valleys and mountain pastures to arrive at the Krimml waterfalls. Remarkable as the highest waterfall in Europe, and fifth highest in the world, Krimml Falls provides great vantage points and gently sloping walking paths up most of its height. Time for doing laundry and relaxing will be set aside this evening.

DAY 8: ZELL AM SEE

Bike, hike, paddle, golf, or slide in scenic Zell am See. The options for activities to fill this day of leisure are varied and plentiful. Whether you choose to zip down the mountain on an alpine slide, hike on the surrounding mountain paths, paddleboard on the lake or play on one of the largest golf courses in the Austrian Alps, this day is yours to fill as you choose. Some reservations will need to be made in advance.

DAY 9: BERCHTESGADEN

Take in the picturesque Parish Church of St. Sebastian before visiting the Documentation Center located at what was once one of Hitler’s most well-known headquarters. The center chronicles the dark history of German National Socialism. After lunch, tour the Salzbergwerk, the oldest active salt mine in Germany. Enjoy a train ride, miner’s slide, 3D animations and boat tour on an underground salt lake.

DAY 10: AUSTRIAN LAKE DISTRICT

Explore the 900-year-old Hohenwerfen Castle, set high on a steep peak above the surrounding valley, renowned for its impressive falconry exhibits. Select from delectable German bakery options treats to enjoy as a picnic lunch at a scenic lakeside viewpoint. Spend the rest of the day roaming the Austrian Lake District, including stops at picturesque Hallstatt and charming Saint Wolfgang im Salzkammergut.

DAY 11: SALZBURG

Relish the beauty of old town Salzburg with its impressive mountaintop castle, imposing cathedral and ties to Mozart. Ride the funicular through the castle walls to Hohensalzburg to enjoy marvelous views of the city, an immersive look at the castle’s history and exhibits that bring the fortress’s colorful past to life. Pause inside the Dom to take in the impressive architecture and relax in the tranquil setting.

DAY 12: HELLBRUNN AND HERRENCHIEMSEE PALACES

Enjoy the laughter-inducing trick fountains and waterworks found throughout the grounds of Hellbrunn Palace. After lunch, travel by ferry to an island set within lake Chiemsee to tour the dazzling Herrenchiemsee Palace. Built by King Ludwig, no expense was spared on this stunning palace and its immaculate manicured grounds. Travel from the dock to the castle by foot or in a horse-drawn cart.

DAY 13: BURGHAUSEN CASTLE AND ALTÖTTING

Roam the grounds of the longest castle complex in the world. Gothic Burghausen Castle, with its high walls, deep moats, and great halls, was a massive, impenetrable medieval stronghold for generations of Bavarian dukes. After lunch, mimic religious pilgrims who have flocked to lovely Altötting for 500 years. The Chapel of Grace houses 28 decorative urns bearing the hearts of Bavarian kings, dukes, and electors.

DAY 14: RETURN HOME

Return home via flights from Munich to Salt Lake City. Travel will be in Economy Basic class unless traveler upgrades to different class for an additional fee. Because of the difference in time zones when traveling from Europe to the United States, the return journey will begin in Europe in the morning and return to the Salt Lake International airport the evening of the same day.

Tour Pricing & Payment Schedule

The Passion Play Tour of Germany and Austria scheduled for July 2022 will be $3,750 per person, based on double occupancy. A $50 discount is given for payment in full at initial deposit; otherwise, the following payment schedule applies, per person:

 

- Initial deposit of $750 reserves spot
- Payment of $600 due on Sept 1st, 2021
- Payment of $600 due on Nov 1st, 2021
- Payment of $600 due on Feb 1st, 2022
- Payment of $600 due on Apr 1st, 2022

- Final payment of $600 due on Jun 1st, 2022

If signing up after any deposit deadline, payment for any previous deposits will be due upon sign-up. Prompt payment is appreciated. Late payments are assessed a $25 late fee.

Tour Inclusions and Exclusions

Included in the tour cost:

Pre-tour information, such as what to pack and how to exchange currency

Round-trip airfare and taxes, basic economy class and non-refundable

Expertise of a tour guide throughout the tour

All sight-seeing and visits, as noted in the itinerary (excludes Zell am See activities)

All on-tour transportation, including trains, local flights, rental vehicles, and buses

One carry-on suitcase and one personal item which fits under airplane seat

All accommodations, based on double occupancy; typically, 3-star hotels and bed & breakfasts

Not included in the tour cost:

Travel insurance

Expenses due to flight delays, strikes, inclement weather or other irregularities

Passport fees, visas and visa photos as required

Personal items such as souvenirs, laundry services, beverages, snacks, and healthcare

Liability Waiver and Release Form

Please sign and return the Liability Waiver and Release Form for each tour participant. A parent or guardian must sign the form for any minor participants. A tour request is officially submitted when both the tour deposit and the Waiver and Release form are received by Aticus Travel, LLC for each tour participant.
